Which alphabet does it teach?
The NATO/ICAO set by default — Alfa through Zulu plus the ten digits, the international aviation and maritime standard. Two more sets ship with the app: Able Baker, the WWII Allied set, and Law Enforcement, the one used by US police and dispatch. Switch in Settings → Alphabet; your progress for each set is kept separately.
Why is it “Alfa” and “Juliett” and not “Alpha” and “Juliet”?
Because that is the standard. Both words are deliberately misspelled so that speakers of every language pronounce them the way the chart intends — AL-FAH, not “alfe”, and JEW-LEE-ETT with the ending sounded. The app teaches the official spellings.
How does it decide what to ask me?
Every letter and digit carries its own mastery level from 0 to 5. Answer one correctly and it moves up and is scheduled further into the future; miss it and it drops back and returns sooner. Questions are drawn from what is due, so the chart you already know stops taking up your time. The Daily Drill is built from your weak letters plus one real string.
Encode marked me wrong but I had all the right words.
Encode is scored in order. A booking reference read back with two letters swapped is a wrong reference, and that is the whole point of the exercise. The summary shows the position where it diverged.
There is no sound, or the voice reads too fast.
The app uses your iPhone’s own speech voices. Check the ring/silent switch and the volume while the app is open, then Settings → Audio inside the app for speech rate. If a voice sounds wrong for your language, iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices is where voices are managed — the app uses whatever your system provides.
Does it work without a connection?
Yes. Every letter, every mode, every string and all your progress are on the device. Airplane mode is a legitimate way to use this app — arguably the intended one.
I turned the Daily reminder on and nothing arrives.
The reminder needs notification permission. Check iOS Settings → Alpha Academy → Notifications is on, then re-open the reminder toggle in the app so it can reschedule. Focus modes and Scheduled Summary can also hold a reminder back until later.
Can I move my progress to a new iPhone?
Your record travels with an encrypted iPhone backup or a device-to-device transfer. There is no account, so there is nothing to sign into on the new phone — restore the backup and the app comes back as it was. Installing fresh on a new device starts a clean record.
How do I delete everything?
Delete the app. Your progress, profile, photo and settings live on the device and go with it. If you also want the device identifier used for notifications removed from our side, write to us and say so — see the privacy page.
Is there a subscription, or ads?
No. Nothing in the trainer is gated, there is no advertising inside it, and rank is information rather than a lock.
Is this an official NATO or ICAO app?
No. It is an independent training app, unaffiliated with NATO, ICAO, the ITU or any aviation, maritime or law-enforcement authority. The alphabets are public standards, reproduced for training.
